The original Typhoon was designed in 1929 by George Crouch. Among George Crouch’s other famous designs are Baby Bootlegger, always beloved, and Teaser, which won awards. Teaser became famous when it won the famous time trial challenge against the Twentieth Century Limited from New York City to Albany in 1925.
The origin of the storm begins with Edsel Ford. Edsel Ford was a passionate and avid boat racer. Aware of the basic information and seeing the famous Introductory Clip in action, Edsel Ford wanted a new high-speed boat like it for his personal use. He contacted the party that built Teaser and constructed an exact replica, naming it Typhoon. Typhoon was 40 feet long, with a weight of 2000 cubic feet. The Wright Typhoon engine was like a wild horse born to race. It could accommodate eight adults in three separate cockpit compartments, but without any other amenities or the safety of any windshields.
In 1941, Ford sold it to Howard Hughes, who kept it operational during the war years but quickly sold it after the war. Afterwards, Typhoon passed through a series of owners in the following years and ended up in Kentucky. Then, in the late sixties, the current owners moved it from Kentucky to Seattle, Washington. In the late 1960s, at Bryants Marina in Washington, the boat docked next to the Typhoon caught fire. The flames spread out of control and quickly engulfed the Typhoon. The storm was a total loss.
