SS France is an ocean liner of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT, or French Line), constructed by the shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire. SS France was commissioned in February 1962. At the time of its construction in 1960, the 316-meter (1,037 ft) vessel was the longest passenger ship ever built, a record unbroken until the construction of the 345-meter (1,132 ft) RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004.
France was built to replace older vessels on the route such as the SS Ile de France and SS Liberté, which had become outdated in the 1950s. Without these ships, the French Line would not have been able to compete with their rivals, notably the Cunard Line, which also had plans to build a new, modern liner. There were rumors that this ship would replace 75,000 tons for their RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth ships. (This ship would eventually be the Queen Elizabeth 2 weighing 68,000 tons). Furthermore, the United States Lines had launched the SS United States in 1952, breaking all speed records on its maiden voyage, with an average speed of 35.59 knots (65.91 km/h; 40.96 mph).
When SS France entered service in 1956, the French Line demanded a ship that was both the longest ever built and one of the fastest. But beyond technical considerations, the ship was also to be a seafaring icon for France and thus had to be designed artistically. Her 316-meter (1,035 ft) hull was designed in the traditional liner style but with a flared bow, ending in a bulbous onion-shaped bow below the waterline, evoking similar lines on the Normandie. Like the Normandie, SS France was adorned with a whaleback on its bow.
