Since 1926, the owner of the Lifesaver Candy Company Ed Noble had been cruising swiftly on the St. Lawrence River aboard his renowned 33′ Baby Gar, known as “SNAIL.” One day, he expressed to Gar Wood his desire for a compact, sleek racer akin to the popular European sports cars but for the water. Wood responded with a high-performance sixteen-footer featuring two seats behind the engine, which he dubbed the “Speedster.” Noble was smitten with the craft, and the initial dozen units were dispatched to the St. Lawrence River for Noble and his companions. His personal speedster was christened the “Miss Behave,” with others in the fleet named “Miss Adventure,” “Miss Chief,” and “Miss Conduct.”
Speedster racing became a regular fixture on the St. Lawrence River until the onset of World War II. The 16-foot Gar Wood speedster stands as the most prized classic production speed boat globally, pound for pound. Presently, the original “Miss Behave” resides in the Thousand Islands Shipyard Museum.
