HMS Endeavour was a research vessel of the Royal Navy commanded by Lieutenant James Cook to Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia on the first voyage of exploration from 1768 to 1771. It was launched in 1764 as the Earl of Pembroke and purchased by the Navy in 1768.
Its flat-bottomed design made it very suitable for sailing in shallow waters and allowed it to be beached for loading and unloading goods as well as performing basic repairs without the need for a dry dock. The hull, inner decks, and futtocks of the ship were made from traditional white oak, the keel and stern post from elm, and its masts from pine and fir.
