Royal Louis was the fourth in a series of six first-rate ships of the French Royal Navy. It was a prestigious three-deck ship intended to display the splendor and power of the French monarchy at sea. However, serving from 1762 to 1772, the ship did not participate in any military activities and spent most of its career at the dock. It was also one of the few three-deck buildings constructed during the reign of Louis XV. Royal Louis was built by engineer Jacques-Luc Coulomb.
