The Eagle is a three-masted barque with 21,350 square feet of sail. It is homeported at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. It is the only commissioned sailing vessel in U.S. government service. (One of only five such training barques in the world. Sister ships include: the Romanian MIRCEA, the Portuguese SAGRES II, the German GORCH FOCK, and the Russian TOVARICH.)
The Eagle bears a name rooted in the earliest history of America’s oldest continuous seagoing service. The first Eagle was commissioned in 1792, just two years after the formation of the Revenue Marine, the forerunner of today’s Coast Guard, the precursor of today’s Coast Guard.
