One of the most famous ships to ever sail the Great Lakes, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was built in 1957 and early 1958 by Great Lakes Engineering Works in Ecorse, Michigan. The ship was christened on June 7, 1958, in River Rouge, Michigan, and embarked on its maiden voyage on September 24 of the same year.
From the time of its christening until 1971, the Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes, with a length of 729 feet and a weight of 13,632 tons when empty. It was named after the president and chairman of the board of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, which owned it, and was permanently chartered to the Oglebay Norton Company in Cleveland, Ohio.
