Jylland the last screw-propelled steam frigate still in existence, played a notable role during the Second Schleswig War in 1864. On May 9, it joined forces with the Danish ships Niels Juel and Heimdall in the Battle of Heligoland, confronting an Austrian-Prussian fleet. Together, they successfully engaged two Austrian frigates, and three smaller Prussian gunboats but couldn’t uphold the blockade on the Prussian North Sea ports. Jylland took substantial damage in the fight.
Reduced to a stationary vessel in the 1890s, Jylland narrowly escaped being scrapped in 1908. The decision to preserve it led to its relocation to Ebeltoft in 1960. The frigate, however fell into disrepair until it was finally placed in dry dock in 1984. Restoration was extensive, requiring over 60% of the timber to be replaced along with the rigging, armament, engines, and other parts.
