The Batavia was a large ship owned by the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie – VOC) and was built in the town of Amsterdam in 1628. The Batavia belonged to the category of East Indiaman ships, designed to withstand long voyages and carry a large quantity of valuable cargo such as spices, silk, and precious stones.
