Construction: Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship commissioned and built on the River Leven, Scotland in 1869 for shipowner John Willis, who ran a shipping company established by his father. The ship was named after Cutty-sark, the nickname of the witch Nannie Dee in Robert Burns’ poem “Tam o’ Shanter” from 1791. It was built to transport tea from China to England.
Function: Initially, Cutty Sark was used to participate in the competition among clippers for the fastest transportation of valuable goods such as tea and wool.
