Product information Elbe Commercial Ship Model :
The Elbe, constructed at the Govan Shipyard of John Elder & Company Ltd., Glasgow, in 1881 for Norddeutscher Lloyd of Bremen, was an illustrious transatlantic ocean liner. Tragically, its demise occurred on the night of 30 January 1895, resulting from a collision in the North Sea with the steamship Crathie, leading to the loss of 334 lives. Equipped with a 3-cylinder compound engine propelling a single-screw propeller, the Elbe boasted impressive speed for its era, capable of reaching 15 knots. However, its limited cargo capacity and high coal consumption rendered its economically unsustainable. Notably, it featured a straight bow, two funnels, and four masts, distinguishing her as the inaugural vessel of the “Rivers Class,” a series of eleven express steamers named after renowned German rivers, launched on 2 April 1881.
