Emma Mærsk is the first container ship in the E-8 class owned by the A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. When it was launched in 2006, Emma Mærsk was the largest container ship ever built.
The Emma Mærsk has a length of 397.71m, a width of 56.40m (equivalent to the area of 4 football fields), and a height of 100m. It can accommodate 22 containers across its width and eight containers in height. According to the group’s calculations, the ship has a capacity of 11,000 TEU. (However, by conventional calculations, it is estimated that the actual capacity of the ship could be between 13,000 and 15,000 TEU). According to the group’s calculations, each container weighs 14 tons, and the ship can carry 11,000 containers. The largest ship previously was the Xin Los Angeles, with a capacity of 9,580 TEU, able to accommodate only 18 containers across. The ship is operated by a crew of just 13 people. Currently, Henrik Solmer is the captain, and Michael Thomassen Sort is the chief engineer.
Currently, the ship regularly sails from Europe to Asia and vice versa.
