Endeavour, a J-class yacht measuring 130 feet in length, was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith and constructed by Camper & Nicholson in Gosport, England, to challenge for the America’s Cup in 1934. After preparing for his campaign aboard Shamrock V, Sopwith was eager to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. Drawing on his experience in aircraft design, Sopwith applied aviation technology to the rigging and winches of Endeavour, sparing no effort to make it the best yacht of her day.
Since its launch in 1934, ENDEAVOUR continued to prepare by competing with Shamrock V (then owned by Sir Richard Fairey) and the newly launched Velsheda (owned by W.L Stephenson). ENDEAVOUR surpassed the British racing fleet and won the hearts of yachting enthusiasts worldwide, triumphing in numerous races in her debut season. Like many before her, Endeavour did not capture the Cup, but ENDEAVOUR came closer to achieving that than any other challenger.
