The sailing ship Gorch Fock I was built in 1933 in Hamburg, which is also its home port. The ship was used as a sail training vessel for cadets.
Gorch Fock I is a German three-masted barque, the first in a series constructed as training ships for the German Reichsmarine in 1933. It was taken by the Soviet Union as war reparations after World War II and renamed Tovarishch.
After briefly flying the Ukrainian flag in the 1990s and spending an extended period in British ports due to a lack of necessary repair funds, the ship was acquired by sponsors and returned to its original home port of Stralsund, where it regained its original name, Gorch Fock. It is now a museum ship and underwent extensive repairs in 2008. Currently, it is seaworthy again and visited the Port of Belfast from April 8 to April 12, 2009, where the public was allowed to board and view the ship.
