HMS Ark Royal was an aircraft carrier of the British Royal Navy that served during World War II. Designed in 1934 to comply with the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, Ark Royal was built by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, England, and completed in November 1938.

The design of Ark Royal was different from previous aircraft carriers. It was the first ship to have the hangar and flight deck as an integrated part of the hull, rather than as an addition or part of the superstructure. Designed to carry a large number of aircraft, it had two hangar decks.
