It held the record for the highest deadweight tonnage ever recorded. When fully loaded, its displacement was 657,019 tons (646,642 long tons; 724,239 short tons), making it the heaviest vessel of its kind.

With a draft of 24.6 meters (81 feet), it was unable to navigate through the English Channel, the Suez Canal, or the Panama Canal. Overall, it is regarded as the largest ship ever built, as well as the largest self-propelled man-made structure ever constructed.
