Specification:

The motor ship Willem Ruys, built in 1939 under the name MS Achille Lauro, was a cruise ship based in Naples, Italy. In 1947, it was renamed MS Willem Ruys, serving as a passenger ship for Rotterdamsche Lloyd. The ship is known for the 1985 hijacking by members of the Palestine Liberation Front and the 1994 fire and sinking.

The ship was ordered in 1938 by Rotterdamsche Lloyd from the shipyard Royal Maatschappij De Schelde (KMS) in Vlissingen, with construction number 214.

On October 7, 1985, four individuals representing the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) hijacked the ship off the coast of Egypt while it was en route from Alexandria to Port Said. After the hijacking, the ship resumed its itinerary. When it visited Antwerp on March 19, 1993, during a voyage in the waters of Western Europe, it passed through the Vlissingen fairway amidst significant public interest. Over a year and a half later, on November 30, 1994, a fire broke out aboard the ship off the coast of Somalia. The ship capsized and sank on December 2, despite assistance from a larger passenger ship with a capacity of 2,058 passengers compared to the MS Queen Victoria’s 2,014.
