The RMS Empress of Ireland was a British-built ocean liner that sank near the Saint Lawrence River in Canada after a collision in dense fog with the Norwegian coal ship Storstad in the early hours of May 29, 1914.

The Empress of Ireland was the second of two ocean liners commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company in the early years of its operations in the North Atlantic. In 1903, Canadian Pacific officially entered the transatlantic passenger transportation market between the United Kingdom and Canada.

This route proved successful in the North Atlantic commercial trade, as in its first year, the three ships completed 33 westbound crossings, carrying a total of 23,400 passengers in third class cabins, mostly immigrants to Canada.

The safety features of the RMS Empress of Ireland included ten watertight compartments dividing the ship’s hull into eleven compartments that could be sealed by closing 24 watertight doors. All eleven compartments extended from the double bottom up to just below the Shelter Deck, equivalent to three decks above the waterline.
