Shamrock V was built in 1930 for the fifth America’s Cup challenge and also the last of Sir Thomas Lipton. Designed by Nicholson, it was the first British yacht built to the new J Class Rule and the only remaining J built of wood. After launching, it underwent continuous upgrades with changes to hull shape and steering.
Sir T.O.M. Sopwith (renowned for aircraft designs in World War I) had considerable knowledge of yacht racing and purchased the yacht in 1932 to gain experience in J Class racing.
Shamrock V was later sold to aviation tycoon Sir Richard Fairey (of Fairey Aviation), himself a sailing enthusiast, who campaigned it alongside two newly-built steel J’s during 1933-1934 – Velsheda and Endeavour. After World War II, Italian owner Mario Crespi installed elegant bird’s-eye maple interior which Shamrock V still retains to this day.
