The fifth SS Rotterdam known as “The Grande Dame,” was launched by Queen Juliana in a gala ceremony on September 13, 1958, and completed the following summer. Rotterdam was the last great “national ship” of the Netherlands, employing the finest craftsmen from the country during its construction and outfitting. It sailed from 1959 until its final retirement in the fall of 2000.
Acquired by Premier Cruises and renamed SS Rembrandt, the ship continued to operate until the company’s sudden financial collapse forced the vessel to be laid up in Freeport, Bahamas, and later in Gibraltar.
