The ship was launched on March 31, 1957, and completed in March 1958 by the Ansaldo Sestri Ponente shipyard in Italy under the name Federico C, the first new ship built for Costa Cruises. Initially, the ship operated between Genoa, Italy, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, via Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In 1983, Premier Cruises purchased the ship and renamed it Royale; it became the StarShip Royale later that same year. In 1988, the ship was renamed SeaBreeze when it entered service for Dolphin Cruise Lines. A year later, the ship underwent refurbishment. Premier assumed ownership of the vessel upon acquiring Dolphin in 1997. When Premier ceased operations in September 2000, the ship was immediately laid up and docked in Halifax. A few days later, it set sail for Freeport, Bahamas.
