The USS Iowa (BB-61) (nickname “The Big Stick“) is the first battleship of the Iowa class and the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named after the 29th state of the United States. Iowa is the only US battleship equipped with a bathtub and is the only one in its class to have operated in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.

During World War II, while operating in the Atlantic, Iowa served in transporting President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Tehran Conference. When transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1944, Iowa bombarded beaches at Kwajalein and Eniwetok prior to Allied amphibious assaults and escorted aircraft carriers operating in the Marshall Islands. In the Korean War, Iowa participated in shore bombardments along the North Korean coast before being placed in reserve and transferred to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet.

Iowa was finally decommissioned in 1990 and struck from the Naval Vessel Register in 1995; however, it was re-registered from 1999 to 2006 under federal law mandating the retention and maintenance of two Iowa-class battleships. In 2011, Iowa was donated to the Pacific Battleship Center in Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization, and permanently berthed at Pier 87 in the Port of Los Angeles in 2012, where it has been opened to the public for tours and serves as the USS Iowa Museum.
