Yamato, named after the ancient Japanese Yamato Province, is a battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy. It was the lead ship of its class. Along with its sister ship Musashi, they were the largest, heaviest, and most powerful battleships ever constructed, displacing 72,800 tons when fully loaded. This class carried the largest naval guns ever fitted to any warship – 460 mm (18.1 in) guns firing 1.36-ton shells.

The ship held particular significance for the Empire of Japan as a symbol of the nation’s naval power (‘Yamato’ sometimes being used to refer to Japan itself), and it was sunk by American aircraft in the closing days of the war during Operation Ten-Go. -The go game is sometimes seen as a symbol of Japan’s own failure.

The Yamato class was constructed after Japan withdrew from the Washington Naval Treaty at the Second London Naval Conference in 1936. The treaty, expanded by the London Naval Treaty in 1930, prohibited signatories from building battleships prior to 1937.

The design work for this class began in 1934, and after modifications, the design for a 68,000-ton ship was accepted in March 1937. Yamato was constructed in strict secrecy at a specially prepared dockyard to conceal its construction at the Kure Naval Arsenal beginning on November 4, 1937. It was launched on August 8, 1940, and commissioned on December 16, 1941.
