Originally constructed as a commercial vessel named MV Jutlandia in Denmark back in 1972, it commenced its commercial duties on June 1, 1973. Subsequently, Hyundai Heavy Industries extended its length in 1984.

Eventually, the vessel transitioned into the possession of the US Navy, undergoing conversion to serve under the Military Sealift Command. Renamed Us Naval Gordon in honor of Master Sergeant Gary Gordon, a distinguished Medal of Honor recipient, it was integrated into the fleet on August 23, 1996.
