HMS Hood is the last battlecruiser and also the only one of the Admiral class of the Royal Navy to be completed and launched. It is regarded as the pride of the Royal Navy in the interwar years and the early stages of World War II.

Its name is derived from the renowned 18th-century admiral of the Royal Navy, Viscount Samuel Hood (1724-1816). Hood served the Royal Navy for over 20 years before being sunk in a confrontation with the German battleship Bismarck in the Battle of the Denmark Strait on May 24, 1941, resulting in extremely heavy casualties (1415/1418 crew members aboard Hood perished. Three survivors were rescued by the British destroyer HMS Electra (H27) on the night of May 24 – early morning of May 25, 1941)
