As of January 2022, the Karel Doorman is a heavy amphibious assault ship, capable of carrying aircraft and serving as a multipurpose vessel. Named after Karel Doorman, a renowned Royal Netherlands Navy captain during World War II, the ship was constructed to replace the older Hr.Ms. Karel Doorman.
