SMS Emden was the final vessel constructed in the Dresden class of light cruisers commissioned by the German Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial Navy). Its namesake derived from the town of Emden, where construction commenced at the Kaiserliche Werft (Imperial Dockyard) in Danzig in 1906. The vessel’s hull was successfully launched in May 1908 and was fully completed by July 1909. Emden was accompanied by one sister ship, Dresden. Similar to the previously built Königsberg-class cruisers, Emden was outfitted with ten 10.5 cm (4.1 in) guns and two torpedo tubes.
