SORLANDET was purpose-built as a training ship and has been used for sail training since its launch in 1927. Donated to the town of Kristiansand in 1977, this fully operational vessel has been operated by Stiftelsen Fullriggeren SORLANDET, a non-profit foundation ever since. Functioning as an active sailing ship, SORLANDET offers young people the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the waves of the great ocean.

SORLANDET won the race between Riga and Travemünde in 2003 and thus would become the defending champion when the starting signal sounded for the race between Stavanger and Cuxhaven in 2004.
