The RMS Queen Elizabeth was an ocean liner operated by the Cunard Line. Together with the RMS Queen Mary, she provided a weekly luxury transatlantic service between Southampton, United Kingdom and New York City, United States, via Cherbourg, France.
The RMS Queen Elizabeth was anchored at Cherbourg (Normandy, France) in 1966. Constructed in the mid-1930s by John Brown and Company in Clydebank, Scotland, the ship was known during its build as Hull 552. Launched on September 27, 1938, she was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth, then Queen Consort to King George VI, who later became the Queen Mother of the United Kingdom in 1952.
With a design that improved upon the Queen Mary, the Queen Elizabeth was a slightly larger vessel, the largest passenger ship ever built at that time, a title it held for the next 56 years. It also held the distinction of being the largest ship ever constructed by gross tonnage.
The ship first entered service in February 1940 as a troopship during World War II, and it wasn’t until October 1946 that she began her intended service as a transatlantic ocean liner.
